What Is “Ideal” Anyway?
Okay, let’s start here: Ideal weight doesn’t mean perfect weight. It’s not about looking a certain way. It’s just a ballpark number — a guide based on your height and gender.
Most ideal weight calculators use the Devine Formula (no, not divine like angelic — though we all deserve to feel that way). The Devine formula was created back in 1974 by Dr. B.J. Devine to help calculate medication dosages. It later got hijacked by the fitness world as a way to estimate a healthy weight range.
Here’s the gist:
- For men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet
- For women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

So… How Accurate Is It?
Honestly? It’s more of a ballpark guess than a precision tool. It gives you a general idea of what’s considered “healthy” based on height, but it doesn’t account for things like:

- Genetics (thanks, Dad)
Like, if you’re super active or naturally broad-shouldered, this number might look laughably low. That doesn’t mean you’re overweight — it just means you’re you.
